Friends of the Library

Mission Statement

The purpose of this organization shall be to foster and perpetuate closer relations between the Clarksville Branch Library and the citizens of the Clarksville area; to promote knowledge of the functions, resources, services, and needs of the Clarksville library; to receive and encourage gifts, endowments and bequests to the library; and to achieve and support the best possible library services and aid of the betterment of facilities.

History

On October 7, 1991 the Clarksville Village Council made a motion to allow use of it's community hall for the purpose of forming a Friends of the Library committee.

The Village of Clarksville purchased the old doctors office building on Main Street and a good deal of remodeling was needed to make it workable for a library.  The building had been vacant for some time and had become in need of repair.  Members of "Friends" went in and tore out walls, donated vinyl and carpeting and layed the flooring as well.  "Friends" have supported the library in many ways, an example was the "Buy a Board" campaign to raise money for shelving units to be custom built to conform to the buildings space.

On August 8th, 1992 the Saranac Library held an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony for the Clarksville Area Library.   "Friends" served refreshments to the community at the event.

Over the years, "Friends" have held many fund raisers in support of the library to help maintain quality levels of service to the community.

The "Friends" group meets three times a year, in January, May and September and is currently seeking new members.  If you feel the library is important to Clarksville, please consider donating a small portion of your time to this very worthwhile cause.
